In checking our planting calendar from last year, I see that we are behind our previous first planting by almost a month. Somehow early spring always takes us by surprise, and despite the indoor projects needing our attention, getting seeds in the soil is the new priority.
Thanks to the enthusiasm and help from our gardening partners, this spring’s salad mix is in the greenhouse enjoying some freak March humidity: arugula, butter crunch and oak leaf lettuces, a mix of three coastal spinaches including the French heirloom, Monstrueux de Viroflay.
Tomatoes, cabbages, and cucumbers are also in their trays, enjoying some sunshine in the mudroom.
Outside the garlic is vigorously sprouting, determined to believe, like us, that winter is almost over. A gardener can always hope, of course.
